Quick answer: If your AC fails during a Los Angeles heat wave, call a licensed HVAC contractor immediately rather than waiting it out — extreme heat is a genuine health risk, not just a comfort issue, and emergency diagnostic visits typically run $150–$350. APLA Construction (CA Lic #1136359) prioritizes no-cooling calls during active heat events across Greater Los Angeles.
Air conditioners tend to fail at the worst possible time: under sustained heavy load during a heat wave, exactly when a system is running hardest and exactly when going without cooling is riskiest. Knowing what to check yourself, when to call for emergency service, and how to stay safe in the meantime can make a real difference.
If none of these resolve it, the system likely needs a professional diagnosis — don’t keep running a struggling system, since that can turn a minor repair into compressor damage.
Extreme heat pushes every part of an AC system harder than normal: the compressor works longer cycles, refrigerant pressures run higher, and any existing weakness — a slow refrigerant leak, an aging capacitor, a marginal electrical connection — is far more likely to fail under that sustained load than during a mild week. This is also why systems that “worked fine last month” can fail during the year’s hottest stretch: the heat wave is what finally pushes a weak component past its limit.
| Service | Typical Cost |
| Emergency diagnostic visit | $150–$350 |
| Capacitor or contactor replacement | $150–$400 |
| Refrigerant recharge (R-410A) | $400–$1,200 |
| Compressor replacement | $1,800–$3,500 |
| Full system replacement, if repair isn’t cost-effective | $6,000–$18,000 |

Per the CDC, extreme heat is a genuine health risk, not just discomfort — heat-related illness can escalate quickly, especially for older adults, young children, and anyone with a heart or respiratory condition. While waiting for repair:
See the CDC’s full guidance on protecting yourself from extreme heat for the complete warning signs.
Response times get longer during citywide heat events since every HVAC company sees a surge in no-cooling calls simultaneously. Calling as soon as you notice a problem — rather than waiting to see if it resolves itself — gets you in the queue earlier.
For a household with young children, elderly residents, or anyone with a heat-sensitive health condition, yes — the CDC treats extreme heat exposure as a real medical risk, not just discomfort. For an otherwise healthy household that can safely wait a day using fans and hydration, standard scheduling is a reasonable way to save on emergency service fees.
Yes. Running a system that’s already struggling (low refrigerant, a failing capacitor, restricted airflow) under heat-wave load can push a minor issue into compressor failure, which is one of the most expensive components to replace. If a system seems to be working harder than usual without cooling effectively, it’s worth a diagnostic visit before the next heat event.
